OTIS REDDING Dock of the Bay Though he had many R&B hits and 2 TOP 20 POP hits his biggest hit did NOT happen in his lifetime. Otis Redding’s DOCK OF THE BAY was actually the first of his posthumous releases and was meant to be the late singers next record, marking a new phase of his career before his untimely death.  Instead, his producer and guitarist Steve Cropper was tasked with assembling this release while still mourning the singers death. With a nice blend of singles and b-sides, DOCK OF THE BAY may be a mixed bag with little cohesion, especially in reference to the title track, that is only because the late singer didn’t have a chance to follow it up.  Even with all that taken into account, DOCK OF THE BAY is still a classic album and perfect first foray into soul, R&B and the distinctive style that STAX Records exhibit. This is a great disc to drop the needle on Sunday mornings and relaxing occasions.
